In Daniel Chapter 3, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego face a pretty stark question: 'Give up your faith or die!' They handle that question in a very faithful way. We are going to read through this chapter section by section. What can we learn from this account for ourselves?

Throughout the Bible times, shepherds were ordinary people. Their job was as common as today's carpenters and mechanics. And it was to shepherds that all of a sudden an angel of the Lord appeared. Not to the teachers of the law and the scribes, not to the high priest or king or some high government official, but to ordinary shepherds. And with the angel the glory of the Lord shone around these shepherds. It was so unusual that they were scared out of their wits. But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you: He is Christ the Lord' (vss 10-11).

One thing you really notice in the western world is the increased awareness of security. Today, many don't take their pet dogs for a walk, the pet dog takes them for a walk because they are so big. In America, more people have 'rock wheelers' than ever before. In the 1970s, when we lived on the farm, we had keys for the front and back door, but seldom remembered to lock it. Today, many people not only have locks, they have security systems that detect the slightest movement and start an alarm. Cars have burglar alarms, which are so common and so sensitive that when they do go off, they hardly get a second look. No one takes too much notice. There has also been a marked increase in home security.

(Changed Around!)
Sermon by Rev S Bajema
on Canons of Dort III-IV:6-17
Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:1-23
Congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
You've heard me say this before. But its echo must be heard again! God does it! Article 6 cannot but remind us of this. It sums up the heart of the gospel. At the same time we are being confronted with our Total Depravity, we see something else. In fact, we wouldn't know it was our Total Depravity if we hadn't first met God's Irresistible Grace!
Here we come to the I in TULIP - Irresistible Grace. This is what Article 6 tells us: 'What, therefore, neither the light of nature nor the law could do, that God performs by the operation of the Holy Spirit through the word or ministry of reconciliation; which is the glad tidings concerning the Messiah, by means whereof it has pleased God to save such as believe, as well under the Old as under the New Testament.'
